Opening Reception

Real Stories Real People is a compilation of photo essays that depict the lives of individuals living with a developmental disability (DD) and that of their families. The stories offer insights into the challenges that individuals with a DD and their caregivers face in their daily lives.

Beate Sass is an Atlanta-based photographer and a physical therapist. She discovered photography in her mid-forties and became passionate about visual storytelling.  She is also a mother of a 25-year-old daughter, Christine, who has a developmental disability (DD). After participating in advocacy training in 2014, she became inspired to combine her passion for photography with her desire to advocate on behalf of individuals living with a DD. As a photographer and storyteller, she realized she could be the voice for parents and individuals living with a disability. Their stories, their struggles, and their triumphs are what inspired this project, Real Stories, Real People.
